Overview
The Generate Trips feature controls whether your tracker automatically records and logs trips on the Hapn platform. When enabled, Hapn uses your tracker's location data to detect movement and create trip records — including start and end times, routes traveled, and distance calculations.
This setting can be turned on or off for each tracker individually, giving you control over which devices generate trip data.
Important: Trip generation is automatically turned off for any tracker that reports its location once per minute or slower. This is to ensure the accuracy and reliability of your trip data.
Why Trip Generation is Turned Off for Some Trackers
Trackers that update their position less frequently than once per minute produce trip data that is often unreliable. Slower reporting intervals can result in:
- Gaps in trip routes — missing portions of a journey between infrequent updates
- Incorrect route calculations — straight-line approximations instead of actual roads traveled
- Inaccurate distance measurements — totals that don't reflect real-world mileage
To protect the quality of your trip records, Hapn automatically disables trip generation for these slower-reporting devices. Trackers that already update twice per minute or faster are not affected and will continue generating trips exactly as before.
Which trackers are affected?
| Reporting Frequency | Trip Generation |
|---|---|
| Faster than once per minute (e.g., Performance, Fast mode) | ✅ On by default |
| Once per minute or slower (e.g., Normal, Regular, Power Saving, Predictable Mode) | ❌ Off by default |
If your tracker is set to Normal mode or slower and you still want trips generated, you can re-enable this feature at any time in your tracker settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this affect my existing trip history? No. Disabling trip generation only affects future trip recording. Your existing trip history will remain accessible in your reports.
Can I re-enable trip generation for a slow-reporting tracker? Yes. Even if trip generation has been automatically turned off for a slower-reporting device, you can re-enable it at any time through the tracker settings. Keep in mind that trip data quality may be lower for devices that don't update frequently.
How do I know what reporting frequency my tracker is using? You can check and change your tracker's reporting mode from the same tracker settings page. For details, see our Reporting Modes Guide.
Which trackers are most likely to be affected? Trackers set to Normal, Regular, Power Saving, Predictable, or any mode that updates once per minute or slower will have trip generation turned off by default. Only trackers using faster modes such as Performance or Fast Mode are unaffected.
I have multiple trackers — do I need to update each one individually? Yes. The Generate Trips setting is managed on a per-tracker basis, so you'll need to visit each tracker's settings individually to make changes.
