Time Machine shows one tracker, on one day, drawn on the map — with the day's totals beside it. It's the view to open when you want to see what happened rather than read a list of it.
Applies to: the Hapn web app at app.gethapn.com.
How to open it
Time Machine is no longer a menu item of its own — you reach it from a tracker. Two routes, both ending in the same place:
From the Live Map (quickest)
- Select the asset in the list to enter follow mode.
- In the bar at the bottom of the map, select History.
- Select Time machine at the top right.
Quicker still: in follow mode, Rewind in the bottom bar opens Time Machine directly, skipping the Trips list. Rewind and History sit next to each other and do different things — Rewind goes to the map, History goes to the list.
From Trips
- Go to Historical Tracking → Trips.
- Choose the tracker from the picker at the top left.
- Select Time machine.
If you're looking for app.gethapn.com/history or a calendar icon in the sidebar, they're gone — history now lives under Historical Tracking, and per-tracker history hangs off the tracker itself.
Moving between days
Time Machine works a day at a time. Use the date stepper at the top right — the arrows either side of the date move you back and forward a day — or the same control in the bar at the bottom of the map. The panel reminds you: use the date controls to change days.
VIEWING · Live at the top right takes you back to the tracker's current position.
The daily summary
The left panel is the part most people come for. For the day you're looking at, it gives:
- Distance and Trips
- Places visited and Stops
- Max speed and Alerts
- Active hours and Idle time
- A Utilization bar — "35% active" — putting active time against the length of the day
A line above it tells you the window the tracker actually reported in ("Reported 11:00 AM – 4:20 PM"), which is the honest bound on everything below it. Under the tiles, N alerts in this window opens what fired.
Idle time next to active hours is the quiet one worth watching: a vehicle with three active hours and two and a half idle is telling you something about how the day was spent.
Trips and Timeline
Two tabs change what's drawn on the map.
- Trips draws the day as connected routes — the journeys, joined up.
- Timeline draws the individual pings — every position the tracker reported, as separate points. Use it when you need to know exactly when and where something reported, rather than the shape of the journey.

Battery trackers show Pings, not Trips
On a battery-powered tracker reporting once a minute or slower, Hapn doesn't generate trips. The reports are too far apart to draw a journey between them.
On those trackers the tab is labelled Pings instead of Trips, the daily summary shows 0 trips, 0 stops and 0.0 mi, and the panel says No trips found. The panel also swaps the vehicle tiles for battery percentage, an estimated days remaining figure, and the update frequency.
This is expected, not a fault. You still have every position the tracker sent — as pings rather than trips. To get trips from that asset it needs a faster reporting mode, at a cost in battery life: see Reporting Modes: How to Adjust Your Tracker's Update Frequency.
Chart: fuel, idle time and utilization
Chart in the bottom bar opens a strip above the map with three metrics for the day you're viewing. Select one to switch:
- Fuel — a real graph of fuel level across the day, with time along the bottom and percentage up the side, and the latest reading at the top right. This is the one worth opening: a line that steps down sharply while the vehicle wasn't moving is the shape of a fuel-theft problem, and it's much easier to see here than in a report.
- Idle time — the day's total, e.g. 2.6h.
- Utilization — the day's percentage, e.g. 35% active.
Idle time and Utilization are each worked out once a day, so they show a single figure and say one reading in this window rather than drawing a curve. Fuel is sampled continuously, so only Fuel plots as a graph.
The × at the top right of the strip closes it.
Chart needs vehicle telemetry. On a battery-powered asset tracker there's no fuel, idle or utilization data to plot, so selecting Chart does nothing — that's expected, not a fault.
The rest of the bottom bar
Alongside Chart, the bar offers Trips (back to the list view for this tracker), Live (return to the tracker's current position), Share Live and Settings.
When to use something else
- The whole fleet's day, not one vehicle's — use the Trips page.
- Stops, arrival and departure times, time on site — the tracker's Trips list shows these as rows with "Arrived … · left …" and a Save as place button.
- Numbers over a period, or a file — use Reports, or Export CSV from the tracker's Trips view. See Getting Your Data Out of Hapn.
If a day looks empty
Before assuming data is missing, check the obvious three: the tracker was powered and in coverage that day; you're on the right date; and — if it's a battery tracker — that you're looking at Pings, not expecting trips. Full list in Troubleshooting: Why Can't I See My Tracker's Location History?
