Start with the first cause below. It accounts for more "my history is missing" reports than everything else combined, and it isn't a fault.
Applies to: the Hapn web app at app.gethapn.com and the Hapn mobile app.
1. It's a battery tracker — you get pings, not trips
A battery-powered tracker reporting once a minute or slower does not generate trips. There's too much time between reports for Hapn to draw a journey, so it shows you the individual position reports — pings — instead.
How to tell this is what you're looking at:
- On the web, it isn't listed on the Trips page — its history is under Historical Tracking → Locations (see the Locations page).
- On the web, Time Machine opens on a list of Pings (with All, Alerts and Pings filters) and there's no Trips tab or distance.
- On the mobile app, History opens on Timeline with Locations selected.
- The tracker shows a battery percentage on its card.
Nothing is missing. Every position the tracker sent is there — as points rather than routes. If you need trips from that asset, it needs a faster reporting mode, and on a battery device that costs battery life. See Reporting Modes: How to Adjust Your Tracker's Update Frequency.
OBD, hardwired and dash cam trackers draw power from the vehicle and report fast enough to produce trips normally.
2. You're looking in the wrong place
History moved. If you're hunting for a calendar icon in the sidebar or the old /history page, that's why you can't find anything.
- The whole fleet's trips — on the web, Historical Tracking → Trips in the left sidebar. On the mobile app, tap Trips in the bottom bar.
- One tracker's day on the map — on the web, Live Map → select the asset → History in the bar at the bottom of the map, which opens Time Machine.
- Stops, arrival and departure times — Trips, with a single tracker selected. Stops are deliberately hidden while you're viewing all trackers at once; the page says so in a banner.
- On the mobile app — on the Live screen, tap the tracker, then History on its card. A tracker with trip generation switched off has no trips in the Trips tab — a battery tracker's history is always under History on its card, where the positions are listed under Locations.
3. The date or a filter
- Check the date. Trips and Time Machine both open on today. Use the date picker or the arrows either side of the date to move.
- Clear filters left from last time. A chip like Speeding or After hours still being active will empty a perfectly normal day. Clear in the More filters panel resets everything.
- Check the tracker selection. If you've scoped to one tracker, go back to All trackers to see the fleet.
4. Generate Trips is switched off
If a vehicle tracker is online and reporting but produces no trips, check this setting on the tracker. With it off, positions are still recorded but never assembled into trips — so Trips and Time Machine look empty while Reports still show raw positions.
See Understanding and Managing the Generate Trips Feature.
5. The tracker wasn't reporting
There will be no history for periods when the tracker was:
- powered off, or out of battery;
- somewhere GPS couldn't reach — underground, inside a metal container, in a parking structure;
- on a plan that was paused or cancelled at the time.
Out of cellular coverage is different. The tracker keeps recording positions while it has GPS but no cell signal, stores them, and uploads them when it reconnects. They then appear in its history at the times they were taken. If the tracker is still out of coverage, that stretch will look empty until it's back — check again after it reconnects. Between its regular reports the tracker doesn't save positions, so the map joins one report to the next with a line.
In Time Machine, the line above the daily summary tells you the window the tracker actually reported in that day — a short window there is the answer.
If the tracker is offline right now, start with My Tracker is Offline: Troubleshooting Guide.
6. Restart the tracker
If it's online but not producing new history:
- Portable trackers — power off, wait 15 seconds, power back on, then leave it outdoors for 5–10 minutes to re-acquire GPS and cellular.
- Hardwired and OBD trackers — disconnect, wait 5–10 minutes, reconnect, then drive 10–15 minutes in decent coverage.
You can also send a Ping or a Reboot command from the app rather than going out to the vehicle.
7. Browser
Rarely the cause, but quick to rule out. Chrome works best with Hapn. Try an incognito window first — if history appears there, clear your normal browser's cache and cookies and try again.

- your account email;
- the tracker model and IMEI;
- the exact dates and times where data is missing;
- where you were looking — Trips, Time Machine or a report;
- which of the steps above you've already tried.
