What Are Places?
Formerly known as Boundaries, Places are virtual perimeters you can create around important locations on the map. When your trackers enter or exit these areas, you can receive instant notifications. Places help you:
- Monitor when equipment arrives at or leaves job sites
- Track when vehicles enter or exit service territories
- Get alerts when assets return to your yard or facility
- Know when tracked items enter unauthorized areas
Note: Places can only be created using the web app, but once created, they can be viewed on both the web and mobile apps.
Creating Your First Place
Step 1: Access the Place Page
- Log in to your account at app.gethapn.com
- Click "Place" from the menu options on the left-hand side
Step 2: Start Creating a New Place
- Click "Create a place" button to begin creating your place
- The place creation tool will open with the map view
Step 3: Choose and Create Your Place

Select a place type:
- Round: Click the circle icon under "Shape" for a quick circular place
- Custom shape: Click the polygon icon under "Shape" to create a precisely defined area

Define your place on the map:
- For round: Click and drag to position and size your circle
- For custom shapes: Click multiple points on the map to create corners, then click your starting point to complete the shape

Customize your place:
- Enter a descriptive name that will help you identify this location (e.g., "Warehouse," "Downtown Job Site")
- Select a color for how the palce will appear on your map
- Adjust the position or shape if needed by dragging points or the entire place

Save your place:
- Click the "Save" button in the bottom right corner
- Your new place will now appear in your places list
Tip: Choose clear, specific names for your places so you can easily identify them in alerts and reports.
Managing Your Places
Editing or Deleting Places

From the map, go to Places at the top:
- Find the place you want to edit or delete
- Click the three dots (⋮) next to that place
- Select "Edit" or "Delete" from the dropdown menu to make your changes.
Viewing Place Activity
To see when your trackers have entered or exited your place:
- Click "Places" from the menu options on the left-hand side
- Select "Place Analysis"
- Filter the report as needed to see specific places, trackers, or date ranges
The Place Analysis shows a historical record of place entries and exits for your trackers, helping you monitor movement patterns and verify location history.

The Tracker Place Analysis report provides detailed insights into how your trackers interact with your places over time.
Accessing the Report
- Log in to your account at app.gethapn.com
- Click "Places" from the menu options on the left-hand side
- Click "Tracker Places Analysis"
Understanding the Report
The report displays key metrics at the top:
- Total Places Visited: How many different places the tracker entered
- Total Time in Places: Cumulative time spent inside all places
- Average Visit Duration: Average length of each place visit
- Most Visited Place: Which place was entered most frequently
Use the tracker dropdown and date selector to filter your results for a specific tracker. The activity table below shows the places the tracker has visited with entry time, exit time, duration, status (Inside/Outside), and address.
Tip: Click "Export CSV" to download the report or "Schedule Report" to receive automated reports regularly.
Setting Up Place Alerts
To receive notifications when your trackers enter or exit places:
- Go to the "Alerts" section from the menu on the left-hand side
- Click "Create new alert"
- From the Location and Movement Alerts section, choose "Place Entry" or "Place Exit" as the alert type
- Choose which place to monitor
- Select which trackers should trigger this alert
- Choose your notification method (email, SMS, or app notification)
- Set any time restrictions if needed
- Click "Save" to activate the alert

Frequently Asked Questions
How many places can I create? There is no limit to the number of places you can create in your Hapn account.
Can I set different alerts for entering and exiting a place? Yes, when creating place alerts, you can choose whether to be notified when assets enter, exit, or both.
Will places drain my tracker's battery? No, places are processed on our servers, not on the tracker itself, so they have no impact on battery life.
Can I see a history of place activity? Yes, the Place Activity Report in the Reports section shows all entries and exits for your places.
