What Are Live Links?
Live Links allow you to share real-time tracker location data with people who don't have Hapn accounts. When you create a Live Link, the system generates a unique URL that provides view-only access to specific trackers you select. Anyone with this URL can see the current location and movement of these trackers without needing to log in.
Important: Live Links do not require passwords and provide open access to your tracker data. Only share Live Links with people you trust.
When to Use Live Links
Live Links are ideal for situations where you need to share location data temporarily or with people outside your organization:
- Sharing delivery vehicle locations with customers waiting for packages
- Allowing event organizers to monitor equipment locations
- Giving family members temporary access to track a shared vehicle
- Providing contractors with location data for specific equipment without full account access
- Sharing fleet locations during special operations or emergencies
Creating a Live Link
From the Web App

Access Live Links Page
- Log in to your account at app.gethapn.com
- Click the menu icon in the upper left corner
- Select "Live Links" from the menu options

Create a New Link
- Click the "Create Live Link" button in the upper right corner
- The Live Link creation form will open

Configure Your Link
- Enter a descriptive name for your Live Link (e.g., "Delivery Truck for Smith Project")
- Select which trackers to include:
- Choose "All trackers" to share every tracker in your account, or
- Select specific trackers from the dropdown list
- Set an expiration time:
- Choose the date and time when the link should expire

Generate and Share the Link
- Click "Create" to generate your Live Link
- The new link will appear in your Live Links list
- Copy the link by clicking the "Click to copy URL" button next to the URL
- Share the link via email, text message, or your preferred communication method

- Open the Hapn mobile app and log in
- Tap the menu icon in the bottom right corner
- Select "Live Links" from the menu options

Create a New Link
- Tap the "Create a Live Link" button at the bottom of the screen
- The Live Link creation screen will appear

Configure Your Link
- Enter a name for your Live Link
- Select trackers to include by tapping the checkbox next to each tracker name
- Set an expiration time:
- Select the date and time using the date picker

Generate and Share the Link
- Tap "Create" to generate your Live Link
- Tap "Click to copy URL" to copy the URL to your clipboard
Managing Your Live Links
Editing Link Settings
- From the Live Links page (web) or screen (mobile)
- Find the link you want to edit
- Click/tap the three dots (⋮) next to the link
- Select "Edit" from the dropdown menu
- Make your desired changes:
- Update the link name
- Add or remove trackers
- Modify expiration settings
- Click/tap "Save"
Setting Expiration Times
Setting expiration times for your Live Links helps limit access to your tracker data:
- One-time sharing: Set the link to expire after a few hours or days
- Regular but temporary access: Create new links with appropriate expiration times as needed
Deleting Live Links
When you no longer need a Live Link, you should delete it to prevent unauthorized access:
- From the Live Links page (web) or screen (mobile)
- Find the link you want to delete
- Click/tap the three dots (⋮) next to the link
- Select "Delete Link" from the dropdown menu
- Confirm by clicking/tapping "Delete Live Link" in the confirmation dialog
Once deleted, the link will immediately stop working, and anyone attempting to access it will receive an error message.
Security Considerations
When using Live Links, keep these security best practices in mind:
- Share responsibly: Only share links with people who need access to your tracker locations
- Use expiration dates: Set appropriate time limits instead of creating permanent links
- Regular audits: Periodically review your active Live Links and delete any that are no longer needed
- Limited selection: Only include the specific trackers necessary for the recipient's needs
- No sensitive locations: Consider whether sharing tracker data might reveal sensitive locations (homes, secure facilities, etc.)
Remember that anyone with the Live Link URL can access your selected tracker data without authentication. The link itself is the only security measure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Live Link recipients see my account information?
No, Live Links only provide access to tracker locations and basic tracker information. Recipients cannot access your account details, billing information, or other account settings.
What exactly can people with my Live Link see?
Live Link recipients can see:
- Current tracker locations on the map
- Tracker movement history (up to 24 hours)
- Basic tracker information (name, status, speed)
- Location addresses
They cannot:
- Change any settings
- Create or delete trackers
- Access reports or analytics
- View or change account information
Will I know who has accessed my Live Link?
Currently, the system does not provide access logs for Live Links. This is why it's important to only share links with trusted recipients.
Can I password-protect a Live Link?
No, Live Links are designed for simple, password-free sharing. For more secure access, consider adding users to your account with limited permissions instead.
What happens when a Live Link expires?
When a Live Link reaches its expiration time, it automatically becomes inactive. Anyone attempting to access the link will see an error message stating that the link has expired or is no longer valid.
