A "wrong" location usually means one of three different things — and each has a different fix. Check one thing first and you'll know which problem you have in under a minute.
First: check the last report time
Open the app and look at your tracker's last report time on its details page.
- Last report is old (hours or days ago)? The location isn't wrong — it's stale. The map always shows the last position the tracker reported, so a tracker that stopped reporting keeps showing wherever it last had signal, even if the vehicle has moved since. - Last report is recent but the position is off? That's a positioning-signal issue — usually weak GPS, or the tracker falling back to less-precise cell positioning. Keep reading.
- The map seems to follow you, not the tracker? Make sure you're looking at your tracker's icon, not your phone's own location dot — they're different markers on the map.
How your tracker determines its location
Hapn trackers don't rely on GPS alone — they use a range of positioning technologies and pick the best one available:
- GPS — the default whenever the tracker has a good satellite signal. Typical accuracy: within 15–20 feet.
- WiFi positioning — used where WiFi networks are visible. In urban and indoor settings, this can actually be more accurate than GPS.
- Cell positioning — the fallback when neither GPS nor WiFi can produce a good fix. It's the least precise of the three, so a tracker relying on cell towers (for example, deep inside a building) can show a position noticeably off from where it really is.
So a recent-but-imprecise position often just means the tracker couldn't get GPS or WiFi at that moment and reported a cell-based estimate. Accuracy returns on its own once the tracker regains a better signal.
What is GPS drift?
GPS trackers need a clear connection to multiple satellites to calculate an accurate position. With a strong signal, accuracy is typically within 15–20 feet. When the signal is partially blocked or weakened — by buildings, metal, or dense tree cover — the reported position can be off by as much as 200 feet. This is called "GPS drift."
Drift looks like:
- The tracker appears to "jump" between nearby locations
- Positions scattered around the actual location
- Occasional false "Trip Start" notifications
- No error message — the tracker believes it has a valid position
What blocks GPS signal
Drift and signal loss happen most often when the tracker is: inside a building or parking garage, in a trunk or closed compartment, surrounded by metal, under dense tree cover, between tall buildings, or in a deep valley with limited sky view. Fix it by tracker type
Portable trackers (Atlas, Atlas Mini, Atlas XL)
- Best placement: under the driver's or passenger's seat, lights facing up. With a magnetic case mounted externally: on a flat part of the frame toward the edge of the vehicle, LEDs facing down.
- Avoid: metal enclosures, undercarriage, engine compartment, wheel wells, bumper, trunk, glove compartment, or any closed compartment.
- To restore signal: take the tracker outside to an open area and give it 2–5 minutes to reacquire satellites. Tracking resumes automatically.

Hardwired trackers (GV-50, GV-57, Pulse Moto, Pulse Wired)
- Best placement: under the dashboard, as close to the windshield as practical, with maximum sky view.
- Avoid: metal enclosures, the engine compartment, the glove compartment, or sandwiched against the firewall.
- If drift started after installation, the mounting position is the first thing to re-check.
Plug-in (OBD) trackers
- Positioning is fixed by your OBD port, so options are limited. If the port is deeply recessed or surrounded by metal, signal quality can suffer.
- Garage/indoor signal loss is normal and self-resolves outdoors.
- If signal problems persist in normal driving, contact support — in rare cases a different tracker type fits the vehicle better.
When it's accurate "enough"
