Overview
Proper placement of your portable GPS tracker is essential for reliable performance. For accurate location reporting, your tracker needs clear access to GPS satellites and cellular networks. This guide covers placement options for all portable tracker models including the GL300, GL500 series, and Micro Tracker.
Recommended Placement Options
Inside the Vehicle
-
Under the driver's or passenger's seat with the indicator lights facing upward
- Provides reasonable GPS reception through the vehicle's windows
- Offers protection from weather and theft
- Works well for all portable tracker models
Note: For extended tracking without recharging, consider using a Hardwire Kit to connect your tracker directly to your vehicle's electrical system. This is only compatible with the GL300 GPS tracker.
Outside the Vehicle
-
On the vehicle's metal frame (undercarriage)
- Position the tracker on the main metal frame, not on moving suspension components
- Best placement is typically on the frame rails along the outer edge of the undercarriage
- Ensure the device is firmly attached to a flat metal surface
Tracker-specific mounting options:
-
GL300 trackers: Require the M2 Magnetic Case for external mounting
- Compatible with both standard M2 case and extended battery cases
- Cases provide both magnetic mounting and weather protection
-
GL500 series trackers: Require a separate magnetic mount accessory
- Weather-resistant by design but need magnetic mount for vehicle attachment
- Magnetic mount accessories are sold separately and attach to the tracker
- Ensure you have the correct magnetic mount designed for your specific GL500 model
Important: Never mount non-weatherproof models (like the GL300) externally without appropriate protective cases. The M2 case is specifically designed to protect the GL300 from the elements while providing secure magnetic attachment.
Locations to Avoid
For optimal performance, do NOT place your portable tracker in these locations:
-
Enclosed metal compartments (trunk, glove box, center console)
- Metal surroundings block GPS and cellular signals
- Even weatherproof trackers will have connectivity issues in these locations
-
Under front or rear bumpers
- These areas often have poor signal reception
- Higher exposure to road debris and damage
- Extreme temperature fluctuations can affect battery life
-
Engine compartment
- Extreme heat can damage the battery and internal components
- If engine area installation is necessary, use a hardwired tracker specifically designed for high-temperature environments
Placement Considerations Based on Tracker Model
Standard Portable Trackers (GL300, etc.)
- Require protective cases for external mounting
- Best for interior placement unless protected
- Typically update every 1-5 minutes when moving (depending on settings)
Weatherproof Trackers (GL500 Series)
- Weather-resistant design handles outdoor exposure
- Longer battery life suitable for extended deployment
- May have light sensors that should not be obstructed
- Require separate magnetic mount accessories for vehicle attachment
Additional Placement Considerations
- Signal strength: Higher placement with fewer obstructions generally provides better GPS reception
- Battery life: Extreme temperatures (hot or cold) can significantly reduce battery performance
- Discretion: Consider how visible you want the tracker to be based on your tracking needs
- Legal requirements: Ensure you have proper authorization to track the vehicle
