System Description
The Hapn Starter Interrupt is an add-on solution designed to provide enhanced security and
operational control over your equipment and vehicles. Through the Hapn platform and mobile
app, the feature allows businesses to remotely disable the engine, preventing unauthorized use
and ensuring equipment operates only within designated schedules or under authorized
conditions. Security can be combined with tampering of the tracker.
This solution requires the installation of a custom starter interrupt cable that is inserted
between the tracker and equipment or vehicle's engine starter.
Key Items
Control operator's access to equipment or vehicles through the Hapn website and mobile
app. Managing "Starter Interrupt" is done in the individual tracker's setting page per the
image below.
Tamper detection alerts for when the tracker's main power is improperly cut, or the tracker is removed from the equipment or vehicle. Managing "Disconnected from Power Source" alerts is done in the alerts'
configuration page per the image below.
Installation of Starter Interrupt Cable
The following image is an overview of how the custom cable with the integrated socket and relay
would allow or deny an operator from cranking the engine by interrupting the starter wire from
the key switch to the starter solenoid.
Pre-installation Check
1. The tracker has been activated in the Hapn platform.
2. The equipment/vehicle's physical location has good cell and GPS coverage.
3. The equipment/vehicle has a good battery.
Note: A tracker out-of-the box will have a low to no internal battery voltage and will need
to be connected to the equipment/vehicle's battery for up to 16 hours to full charge. A
charged internal battery will ensure the device has enough power to test the tamper
alert when removed from the equipment/vehicle's battery.
Installation Steps
1. Remove the necessary panels to access the tracker, existing cable if applicable and
starter.
2. Locate a point along the starter solenoid's enable wire that provides the space for
cutting and splicing in the wires from the custom cable. The best location might be the
following (image below):
A. The starter wire closes to the key switch (i.e.: steering column).
B. The starter wire closes to the starter solenoid (i.e.: engine compartment).
3. Find a location where the tracker can be secured to the equipment/vehicle. This
location should not interfere with the driver plus, insuring none of the wires can get
damaged when the panels are reattached. Do not permanently mount the tracker
yet in case it has to be relocated.
4. Loosely run the custom cable two black relay wires to the location where the wires will
be spliced to the starter wire.
5. Loosely run the custom cables three power wires. Red runs to the battery positive
terminal or fuse panel. Black runs to the battery negative terminal or a grounding
point on chassis. White runs to the ACC/IGN point in the fuse panel.
6. Cut the enable solenoid wire and splice each cut end to one of the two brown wires. It
does not matter which brown wire attached to each cut end.
7. Attach the custom cable three power wires.
8. Plug the custom cable to the tracker using the mating connector.
9. Allow a few minutes for the GNSS to find its location and report back to the Hapn
platform. Reference tracker's User Guide for LED light(s) description.
10. Test installation
- In the web or mobile app, "enable" the Starter Interrupt feature to this
specific tracker. - Turn the key to 'Start' position. The engine should be allowed to start.
- Turn the key to 'Off' position.
- In the web or mobile app, "disable" the Starter Interrupt feature to this
specific tracker. - Turn the key to 'Start' Position. The engine should be blocked from
starting. - Turn the key to 'Off' position.
- In the web or mobile app, create a 'Main Power is Disconnected" alert
type for this specific tracker. - Unplug the tracker from the custom cable. A user should receive a
notification depending on which option is selected: email or SMS or
both. - Reconnect the tracker to the custom cable.
- Permanently secure the tracker, custom cable and wire to the chassis.
- Reattached all the panels.
Post-installation Check
1. Perform a final validation that the tracker and starter interrupt is still operating after
reattaching panels to make sure there was no damage.
-
- In the web or mobile app, "enable" the Starter Interrupt feature and attempt
to crank the engine. If the engine is allowed to start then re-check all the
wiring and connections. - Otherwise, "disable" the Starter Interrupt feature to allow operation of the
equipment/vehicle.
- In the web or mobile app, "enable" the Starter Interrupt feature and attempt
2. Installation is completed.
