What You'll Need
- Your OBD GPS tracker
- Vehicle manufactured after 1996 (OBD-II compatible)
- 5-10 minutes of time
Before You Begin
About the OBD Port
The OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) port is a standardized connector found in all vehicles manufactured after 1996. This port provides both power and diagnostic data to your tracker, eliminating the need for separate power cables or installation.
Locating Your OBD Port
Most common location: Under the dashboard on the driver's side, typically:
- To the lower left of the steering wheel
- Along the bottom edge of the dash panel
- Near the hood release or parking brake
Alternative locations (varies by vehicle):
- Under the passenger-side dashboard
- Inside the center console
- Near the fuse box
Tip: If you can't locate the port, consult your vehicle's owner manual or search online for your specific make and model.
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Ensure Vehicle is Off
- Turn off your vehicle's ignition
- Remove the key from the ignition (if applicable)
- Engage the parking brake for safety
Step 2: Locate the OBD Port
- Look under the dashboard on the driver's side
- The port is a 16-pin trapezoid-shaped connector
- It may have a protective cover that you'll need to remove
Step 3: Inspect the Tracker and Port
- Examine your OBD tracker's connector
- Note the shape - it's designed to fit only one way
- Check that the port is clean and free of debris
Step 4: Connect the Tracker
- Align the connector: Match the tracker's plug shape with the port opening
- Insert gently: Push the tracker straight into the port
- Apply firm pressure: Push until the connector is fully seated
- Don't force it: If it doesn't fit easily, check the orientation
Important: The connector is keyed to prevent incorrect installation. If it doesn't fit easily, you may need to rotate it or try inserting it upside down, depending on your vehicle's port orientation.
Step 5: Check Initial Connection
- The tracker should fit snugly in the port
- No part of the connector should be visible
- The device should feel secure when gently tugged
Verifying Successful Installation
Power-On Confirmation
Once connected, your tracker will automatically power up:
-
Turn on your vehicle's ignition (engine doesn't need to start)
-
Look for LED indicators on the tracker:
- Blue LED: GPS connection status (may blink while connecting)
- Green LED: Cellular connection status (may blink while connecting)
-
Normal operation indicators:
- Blue LED becomes solid when GPS connects
- Green LED blinks slowly (once every 3 seconds) when cellular connects
Testing the Installation
- Drive for 10-15 minutes in an area with good cellular coverage
- Check your Hapn account to see if the tracker appears online
- Verify location updates are being received
Troubleshooting
If the Tracker Won't Fit
- Check orientation: Try rotating the connector 180 degrees
- Verify vehicle compatibility: Ensure your vehicle is 1996 or newer
- Clear obstructions: Remove any covers or debris from the port
- Consult vehicle manual: Some vehicles have multiple diagnostic ports
If No LED Activity
- Verify ignition is on: The tracker needs vehicle power to operate
- Check connection: Ensure the tracker is fully inserted
- Try a different approach: Remove and reinsert the tracker
- Test OBD port: Try connecting with ignition in different positions
If LEDs Don't Stabilize
- Move to open area: GPS needs clear view of sky to connect
- Check cellular coverage: Poor signal may cause connection delays
- Allow more time: Initial connection can take 5-10 minutes
- Drive the vehicle: Movement can help establish connections
Next Steps
After successful installation:
- Log into your Hapn account to verify the tracker appears online
- Configure tracker settings such as reporting frequency and alerts
- Set up boundaries for important locations if desired
- Download the mobile app for convenient tracking on the go
Important Notes
- Leave connected: The tracker is designed to remain connected at all times
- No interference: The tracker won't affect your vehicle's operation or diagnostics
- Power management: The tracker has a backup battery for brief power interruptions
